S+A WITH SMMA Providence College has been experiencing increases to campus enrollment and crowding in campus housing for several years. In 2019 the College engaged SMMA and Stegman+Associates to analyze the needs for existing housing and develop options to add to on-campus housing stock. The planning process included tours and documentation of existing buildings, on-campus meetings and focus groups with different student cohorts. The result of the process was a series of models for campus housing, where predicted numbers of students were sorted by class year and then matched to housing facilities that are most appropriate to support their development.
Each option included renovations to traditional halls and a range in proposed new construction. The preferred approach includes the renovation of an academic building into 160 beds in semi-suite style units as well as the construction of about 200 new beds in similar configurations. Design and planning work will continue to develop more detailed drawings for the proposed work.
