S+A WITH NADAA The Rhode Island School of Design had been pursuing the development of new housing on its Providence campus for fifteen years and Stegman+Associates worked with the College over the course of several years to examine both proposals for new housing projects and renovations to existing structures.
In 2019, RISD worked with NADAA with S+A as planning consultant to propose a redesign of the main quadrangle, a dense fortress-like block on a steep grade that includes the nationally renowned dining facility "The Met", along with South, Homer, Nickerson, and East Halls. The redesign created interior renovations for existing halls, as well as a new residence hall, North Hall, located unsurprisingly at the the north edge of the Quad block. These renovations and new construction represent a first phase in what is planned to become the total renewal of the quad block to include ground level welcome center built into the hill, and vastly improved student facilities.
